Buildings with a history, if you own one and it falls under a protection scheme, you have to keep it pretty much original. I believe in the UK they call it a listed building.
Here in the US there is the Register of Historic Places, which has rules similar to protected houses. They are often beautiful buildings, but if you own one there are strict limitations about changes, renovations, and repairs.
